What if you made a conscious choice to be a little happier today? Not because everything is perfect. Not because you suddenly have nothing to worry about. And not because you need to force yourself into a cheerful mood. Simply because you decided to make a little room for joy.
We can sometimes think of happiness as something that happens to us...a good day, exciting news, a fun weekend, a special occasion. But there are also small ways we can intentionally invite more happiness into our everyday lives.
Joy doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes it's as simple as stepping outside, connecting with someone you love, getting lost in a good book, or pausing long enough to watch the sky change colors.
Five little ways to choose joy today...
1. Call a friend and meet up for coffee.
Put the phone down and connect in person. Share a laugh, catch up on life, or simply enjoy being together. Sometimes a little connection is exactly what we need to shift our energy.
2. Take your furry friend for a walk.
Fresh air, sunshine, movement, and the enthusiastic company of a beloved pet? That's a pretty good recipe for a better day. Leave your phone in your pocket for a while and notice what's around you.
3. Visit a library and check out a good book.
There is something wonderfully peaceful about wandering through the shelves and discovering something that catches your attention. Choose a book simply because it looks interesting...not because you should read it.
4. Bake something savory.
Give yourself permission to play in the kitchen. Try a new recipe, make an old favorite, or bake something just because it smells amazing. There is joy in creating something with your hands...and even more joy when you get to eat it afterward.
5. Watch the sunset.
Instead of rushing through the end of the day, pause for it. Find a spot with a view and watch the colors change. You don't need to accomplish anything. Just be there.
Happiness can be found in the pause.
Choosing happiness doesn't mean ignoring the difficult parts of life. It means remembering that difficult moments aren't the only moments available to us. There can still be beauty in an ordinary Tuesday. There can be laughter in the middle of a stressful week. There can be connection, fresh air, creativity, quiet, and wonder...even when life isn't unfolding exactly as we'd planned.
Sometimes we simply have to notice the invitation. So today, choose one small thing that feels good to your spirit... Call someone. Go outside. Make something. Read something. Watch the sky.
And then notice how you feel.
Maybe choosing joy doesn't require a major life change. Maybe it starts with something wonderfully simple: deciding to make a little more room for happy.
